Happy Easter!

Movies

This is the last week I'll be watching movies every night. After this, I'll switch to watching series instead for another four weeks, maybe less, depending on whether I can find crap worthy to see.

Monday: Of Mice and Men

Two friends, George and Lenny, start working on a new farm, hoping they can start all over again after narrowly escaping a near-death situation on another farm. Lenny is a literal retard, which complicates things every time. A decent movie, however I hadn't anticipated such a cruel ending.

Tuesday: Zombieland

Set in a zombie post-apocalyptic world, four idiots team up and travel through 'murica, hoping to find a safe haven at the end of their journey. This movie is a rare example of the zombie apocalypse theme that is not an overdramatized shit; instead Zombieland approaches the topic from its humorous side. The cast is small, the story is straightforward and easily predictable - it is the humor that keeps this movie above the mediocrity line.

Wednesday: Ace Ventura - When Nature Calls

World-renowned animal detective Ace Ventura is summoned to help an African tribe find its lost saint animal, a huge white bat. This movie is almost as hilarious as the first one, but I think the urban setting suits Jim Carrey's character better. At least they needn't have shown cheap CGI backgrounds and terrible animal models.

Thursday: Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas tells six stories in different timeline about how people from one timeline influence events in other timelines. It's from the Wachowskis, so its deliberately full of cryptic shit and I'm 100% sure I didn't get this movie. What I can say for sure, it was way too long and uninteresting. After more than 8 years I just found out that the Wachowski brothers are now sisters - they too fell victim to the transnigger disease that's plaguing our society.

Friday: Love Actually

Now which doll should we get for Daisy's friend Emily? The one that looks like a transvestite or the one that looks like a dominatrix?

We follow the lives and wavering relationships of a few people: stories of success, of small progress, of unrequited love, of cheating. [cheesy summary] But at Christmas Eve, a miracle occurs: love [/cheesy summary]. This romance/comedy movie is a great example that a movie can be great with such an uncomplicated storyline. As they say, simple is the best.

Saturday: 雪女 (Snow Woman)

I originally wanted to watch Ran from Kurosawa Akira, but because I was busy playing CnC3 GDI campaign I didn't want to watch a three hour movie. This movie is an adaptation of Lafcadio Hearn's story of the same title; the original story is a local folktale of a village Hearn visited. I was very disappointed because there are no English subtitles for this movie and I couldn't understand as much as I hoped for, I blame the hillbilly accent for this. To be honest, watching the gypsies beat each other on the first floor at 2 AM was more entertaining than Snow Woman.

Sunday: Dark City

Dark City is a weird amalgamation of the Truman Show and the Matrix: aliens, who can alter memories of captured humans and the reality around them conduct experiments to find what they think is the key to their survival - human soul. The city and the overall darkish/depressive atmosphere reminded me of the leaked Half-life 2 beta.
